These people did say it would be River, not Clara, in all the Doctor’s lives in the finale based on what Moffat had established in earlier episodes and what they see around the office. And Alex said Moffat promised her the next Doctor would be “her Doctor”, but instead…

So I’ll hope and pray River is coming back, but will believe it when one of her earlier versions is back saying “Hello, Sweetie”, the Doctor greets his wife, and Moffat commits to Alex back with lots of River’s adventures the way he did with Series 6.

GUYS THINK ABOUT THIS:

Clara has just mentioned seeing River. The Doctor says he always sees her. 
When Clara says she saw her, The Doctor is hit with the realisation that River in fact is real, and not just in his imagination. And that kills him. 
He’s crying because he thought he had an ending with her, but now he has to have another. 

HE’S CRYING BECAUSE SHE’S REAL.
